The International Energy Agency expects renewable electricity generation to grow by more than 8% in 2026. Renewable electricity generation is projected to rise from about 33% of the global share in 2025 to 37% by 2027. This change reflects years of heavy investment. Solar, wind, and hydropower all played a role.

2025 Was Already a Major Turning Point

In 2025, renewable electricity generation made up about 34% of the global total. That is up from 32% in 2024. It is up from just 23% a decade earlier. The pace of change keeps speeding up.

When nuclear power gets added in, low-emissions sources reached 43% of global electricity generation. That is the highest level in about five decades. Solar and wind mattered most here. Together, they produced around 17% of the world's electricity in 2025. Meanwhile, fossil-fuel generation actually declined slightly, even as overall demand kept growing.

Solar Is Changing the Pace of the Transition
